Mohamed Ali's Imaret
Mohamed Ali never forgot his native town. While he was in Egypt he endowed Kavala with schools, hospitals and other charitable institutions, including the Imaret, a foundation with charity and educational purposes. The institution consisted of two Medrese (Colleges) for the teaching of various disciplines e.g. Theology, Law, History, Geography, Mathematics, Arabic and Poetry, a Mekteb (Koran School) and a Mosque. Apart from free education, food - free of charge - was offered to the poor and invalid regardless of their religion. The operation went on until the early years of the twentieth century, while in 1954 Imaret was listed by the Greek Government as a Protected Monument. The monument's desolation and fading beauty stimulated a private company to undertake the restoration of the building and after four years (2001-2004) of restoration works carried out by specialists the edifice was completely renovated revealing not only its original architectural beauty, but also its spirit and atmosphere as a site of education and hospitality.
